King County Fire Department: Bike Safety

Ms. Kirstina came to see us today to talk about the importance of bike safety.

She taught us to look left, right, left again before we cross the road because we need to look for cars, or other bikes that might be passing by us. Also, make sure you look the driver in the eyes so that she or he notices you. She taught us to walk our bikes in a crosswalk because if you fall, a car might not see you.

She showed us how to fit a helmet to our head.
It's all about the "eyes, ears, mouth." The helmet should fit two fingers above the eyes. The straps should make a V around our ears. We should be able to fit two fingers under the chin strap. The helmet should not be wiggling on our heads, worn too far forward, or too far backwards. ALWAYS wear a helmet and make sure the STRAP is locked under your chin.

She showed us what it would look like if our brain hit the road and cracked like this egg if we don't wear a helmet.

We don't want our brains to look like this, so we wear a helmet. She also told us that if we have a brain injurty, our brains typically don't heal like other injuries, so it's extremely important to be safe and protect your brain.

He's an example of a brain with a helmet in a crash.

Here is a web site for the video she showed us. Watch it again and show it to your brothers and sisters.
She also brought us really cool sunglasses that we wore to Field Day!

We're cool and we know it!

Fairy Tale Puppets and Reader's Theater

What an exciting day! We made our fairy tale puppets.

Of course, Mr. Domingo helped us as he usually does because he is so kind to us.

The finished products were so cute.

Next step: rehearsing our Readers' Theater scripts.

Importance of Summer Reading

Research shows:
Students who read over the summer do better in school in
the fall.
Students who do not read over the summer demonstrate
academic loss in fall.
8 out of 10 studies indicate students who read for fun out-
performed those who did not.
Students read more when they can choose their own
books.
Reading11 books over the summer can prevent academic
loss.
Summer reading loss is cumulative. By the end of 6th grade,
children who do not read over the summer are two years behind other children.

Summer Reading Packets

In the report cards, I placed a gift packet to the students. They should have received their King County Library Card that was issued to them along with the application that I helped them fill out for their card. This application has their PIN on it. Parents will need to go to the library to verify that the address is correct within the next three months. Students can check out up to 99 books at the same visit. You can also check out DVDs, CDs, magazines, and more! In the mean time, I have taught the students how to access the FREE databases to help keep them reading at home with their new library card.

Please note: make sure to look inside your big report card envelope for your card. I hear they like to hide in the bottom of the envelope!

Within this gift packet, the students should have found all of the reading incentive programs for which I included. Here they are if you need more for any siblings in the household.

The students earn two prizes for reading and a chance to win an iPad!

At Barnes&Noble, the students can earn a free book.

The same thing at Half Priced Books.

Finally, the students can log their reading minutes for the above three programs on the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge in order to be a part of breaking a record for the Guinness Book of World Records!

The same minutes can be applied to all four programs. I have taught the students how to access each of these sites and how to use them. I hope this helps keep your child reading over the summer. Why? Look for the next blog entry to help inspire you to keep your child reading.

Ready? Set. READ!

King County Library Cards

We were so excited to get our King County Library Cards!

We spent two weeks learning how to use our cards.

These cards are magical. We can use the databases, and check out DVDs and books and music, for FREE!

The databases we loved the most include BookFlix and Tumblebooks! We are ready for summer reading.
A big thank you the the King County Library System staff for helping us with our goal.

Volunteer Appreciation Brunch

We honor our volunteers each year with a special event.

This year, the them was camping. This is the table decore.

We had a brunch for the volunteers and staff.

The Uke group that Mr. Abernethy teaches, entertained us.

Our Volunteer Appreciation Committee does such creative and clever work. We had a great time.
