King County Fire Department: Bike Safety

Ms. Kirstina came to see us today to talk about the importance of bike safety.

She taught us to look left, right, left again before we cross the road because we need to look for cars, or other bikes that might be passing by us. Also, make sure you look the driver in the eyes so that she or he notices you. She taught us to walk our bikes in a crosswalk because if you fall, a car might not see you.

She showed us how to fit a helmet to our head.
It's all about the "eyes, ears, mouth." The helmet should fit two fingers above the eyes. The straps should make a V around our ears. We should be able to fit two fingers under the chin strap. The helmet should not be wiggling on our heads, worn too far forward, or too far backwards. ALWAYS wear a helmet and make sure the STRAP is locked under your chin.

She showed us what it would look like if our brain hit the road and cracked like this egg if we don't wear a helmet.

We don't want our brains to look like this, so we wear a helmet. She also told us that if we have a brain injurty, our brains typically don't heal like other injuries, so it's extremely important to be safe and protect your brain.

He's an example of a brain with a helmet in a crash.

Here is a web site for the video she showed us. Watch it again and show it to your brothers and sisters.
She also brought us really cool sunglasses that we wore to Field Day!

We're cool and we know it!
