January Homework Finishers!

These silly creatures finished all of their homework in the month of January.

This is how they look when they know they get a trip to the Prize Box!

Dr MLK Jr Acrostic Poems

After and during our study of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we created some acrostic poems.

We had a tub full of books to help us with our word choice and research.

Many terrific words were learned.

We collaborated with one another as we worked in pairs.

We were proud of our finished products.

The Color of Us

We read The Colors of Us by Karen Katz in honor of the MLK holiday. We celebrated our colorful classroom and marveled in the fact that our classroom is the very epitome of Dr. King's dream:

I have a dream that one day my four children will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.

Thank you, Dr. King, for what you did to help us to learn together. Grow together. Play together. Love together. Be together.

Book It! Theater Performs for EP Students

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr III Day, Emerald Park invited the Book It! Theater to perform Never Forgotten by Patricia C McKissack.

"Forceful and iconic," raved Publishers Weekly in a starred review. This gorgeous picture book by Newbery Honor winner Patricia C. McKissack and two-time Caldecott Medal-winning husband-and-wife team Leo and Diane Dillon is sure to become a treasured keepsake for African American families. Set in West Africa, this a lyrical story-in-verse is about a young black boy who is kidnapped and sold into slavery, and his father who is left behind to mourn the loss of his son. Here's a beautiful, powerful, truly unforgettable story about family, memory, and freedom.

Can You Balance a Crayfish?

We are learning about balance in motion in science.

We are learning to add counterweight to help balance an object.

We also had to explore various body parts to see which would have the best success, of course. We are second graders, after all. You just never know where a good balancing spot might be.

Golden Clock Award

We worked hard to get to school on time because we know that tardiness disturbs the learning environment, creates more work for the office staff, and makes a student's day start off with an unnecessary challenge. We had the least amount of tardy students in the month of December in the K-2 suite, so we earned the Golden Clock Award. More importantly, we learned that being prompt and on time matters to everyone. Good habits are encouraged here.

Seahawks Blue Friday

Aaron and Mrs. Standlee tried their best to bring good luck to the Seahawks to win their game.

Sadly, the Seahawks fell short after a monumental comeback. Drats! Thank you for a great season. We look forward to next year.
